Gary Forrester
Born: 1946 in Decatur, Illinois
Pen Name: None Connection to Illinois: Gary was born and raised in Illinois, but has lived most of his adult life overseas. Biography: He lives in New Zealand with his wife Keziah and their two youngest children. He is the author of three novels and a book of verse, as well as numerous academic writings on the law and other subjects. For many years he was a member of an Australian bluegrass band, The Rank Strangers, that gained some notoriety Down Under in the process of touring and producing albums of Forrester’s musical compositions. Forrester grew up in America’s midwest — much of it in the heart of Illinois, but he shared, with many of his ancestors, a wanderlust — an impatience to try everything and see everything. As a musician, that was an asset. After his two novels, Houseboating in the Ozarks and Begotten, Not Made, were published, he turned to this memoir — which has turned out to be much more. As Forrester learned of relatives who came before him, he was swept away with the need to see facts, photographs, documents. The author found “relief” in discovering the very human side of his family. Forrester, a composer, lyricist, musician, and attorney, lives and works in beautiful New Zealand.
