John H. Brinton

Died: March 18, 1907 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Pen Name: None Connection to Illinois: Dr. Brinton wrote about the Civil War, an Illinois subject of interest. Biography: Brinton graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1850, and from the Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in 1852. In 1853, he became a general practictioner in Philadelphia. He served as a brigadier surgeon in the American Civil War and later served as the medical director for General Ulysses S. Grant. His memoirs reveal a remarkable Civil War surgeon, a witness to conditions in Cairo, the Battle of Belmont, and the Siege of Fort Donelson who encountered almost every Union military leader of note.
