She now lives in Springfield, Illinois and has called that city her home after leaving Kansas City, although in the 1980's, she spent a considerable amount of time in Chicago.Gene, the main character in the book, was a lifetime friend of the author. Her book, The Hero, the Protector, the Healer, and the Lover, is about his life. There was a movie made about his untimely, tragic death in 1987, titled 'White Mile.'
