Connection to Illinois: Jones was born in Carbondale. She attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and received BS in Social Welfare in 1982. She also lived in Chicago for a time.

Biography: Joyce Marie Jones was writer, poet and orator. She earned a BS in journalism from Southern Illinois University and graduated from Fordham University Graduate School of Social Services in New York City in 1992 with her MSW. At Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Jones co-founded the student run Poetry Factory Press. It promoted student performance poetry and first publications. Jones worked as Administrative Social Worker in Chicago, San Francisco, New York, and Denver. She developed poetry workshops designed to communicate with children and adults in crisis. Her expertise was in working with domestic violence victims, men who batter women, drug/alcohol abusers,foster care children, social work staff development, gay/lesbian issues, HIV program development, crisis intervention programming and breast cancer social intervention. After retiring, she spent the majority of her time writing.
