Excerpt from The Inhabitants of Three French Villages at Peoria, Illinois: A Directory: Old Peoria, 1765 to 1796; La Ville De Maillet, 1778 to 1812; Trading House, After 1812 Antoine Saint Francois sowed corn here in 1765 and there is some evidence of earlier colonization although such settlement probably was not continuous. The population was a floating one and the inhabitants were forced to remove, once for two years on account of Indian depredations. Mostly illiterate, the French of Peoria were a care-free people, able to adjust themselves quickly to changes of political fortune. Lives of many were filled with adventure and romance.
