Connection to Illinois: McCaughan moved to Chicago in 1977 and lived there until 1993. Ten years later, she started spending her summers in Chicago.

Biography: Katherine McCaughan was born in China to Russian parents who had settled there. When she was five, her family fled to Australia after the Communist Revolution. McCaughan grew up, attended college and taught high school English and History while in Australia. In 1977, she and her husband moved to Chicago. They moved to Hong Kong in 1993 and lived there for ten years. During this time, McCaughan wrote book reviews for ''B-International Magazine'', personal essays for ''AWARE'' magazine, published a short story in Australia, and taught creative writing at the Hong Kong YWCA. She now spends her summers in Chicago and the rest of the year in Jacksonville, Florida.
