Henry Lemar Hartman

Pen Name: Lemar Hartman Connection to Illinois: Hartman was born and raised in Irving. He resides there again today. Biography: Lemar Hartman graduated from Irving High School in 1940. He enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17, shortly after graduation. He arrived at Pearl Harbor on December 6, 1941, the day before the Japanese attack and served on the USS Selfridge, a destroyer. During his Naval service, Hartman wa also in the Guadalcanal invasion and was at Tinian when the war ended. He was discharged in 1946. He has lived in Indiana, Texas and Alabama. He retired from Phillips Petroleum Company and served as a village trustee in his hometown of Irving, Illinois. His drive established and maintains the Irving Museum, and he has been involved in the restoration of McCord Cemetery. In 2002, he was honored with the Studs Terkel Humanitarian Award.Hartman wrote his book at the urging of his family. It is a chronicle of his military service.
