Biography: Simon was a graduate of Barat College and Northwestern University Law School. From 1952 she served as assistant State's attorney in Cook County, Illinois. In 1956 and 1958 she was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives where she met her husband, fellow State Assemblyman Paul Simon. It was the first time in Illinois history that two sitting members of the Illinois General Assembly married.In recognition of her lifelong advocacy of libraries and literacy, President Bill Clinton appointed her in 1993 and 1997 to two terms as chairperson of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, in which she served until her death
