Introduction to public policy
ISBN: 9780393926651 OCLC: 317920196

Public policy is the process by which groups act collectively--everything from declaring war to installing stoplights. We study public policy in the hopes that we can do better. It is an audacious task. What activities are best handled by the market? How can we act in the face of scientific uncertainty? How can we make sense of the opinions of hundreds of millions of people? how can we evaluate trade-offs--economic growth versus environmental protection, for example? How can we even measure our success. This book is a toolkit for understanding the public-policy process and for making better public-policy decisions. [p.4] of cover.

Naked statistics :
ISBN: 9780393347777 OCLC: 783162698

The field of statistics is rapidly transforming into a discipline that Hal Varian at Google has called sexy. And with good reason; from batting averages and political polls to game shows and medical research, the real-world application of statistics is growing by leaps and bounds. In this book the author demystifies the study of statistics by stripping away the arcane and technical details to get at the underlying intuition that is key to understanding the power of statistical concepts. Tackling a wide-ranging set of problems, he demonstrates how statistics can be used to look at questions that are important and relevant to us today.
