Morris Birkbeck

Pen Name: Jonathan Freeman

Connection to Illinois: Birkbeck lived in the south of Edwards County in the Illinois territory. He founded Wanborough, just two miles west of what is now known as Albion. He also served as the Illinois Secretary of State for three months.

Biography: Morris Birkbeck was an English agricultural innovator, author/publicist, anti-slavery campaigner and early 19th-century pioneer. In 1823, by cogent articles contributed to newspapers under the name of “Jonathan Freeman,” he helped to consolidate the anti-slavery forces in Illinois and to save the state for freedom.
