World Almanac Library, Milwaukee, WI : 2002.

Examines the founding of the English colony at Jamestown, its struggle for survival, and its eventual decline. The story of how Jamestown, Virginia, struggled into existence is a tale of hardship and misadventure. This book details the failures and successes of the Jamestown colony, from the Starving Time to the tobacco boom. It is also a tale of perseverance and opportunity. This English settlement in North America was home to the first legislative assembly, the basis for local government today. The Virginia colony, however, was founded at a terrible cost -- both to the Native people who suffered loss of lands, ways of life, and life itself, and to the colonists who were ill prepared for the rigors of their venture.

To many Americans, the Alamo has become a symbol of a certain spirit, that of courage in the face of insurmountable odds. This book shows that courage was indeed present when Texan rebels faced the Mexican army. As the background to the conflict is detailed, however, questions arise. Was this a stand against oppression or an attempt to seize Mexican lands for the rapidly growing United States? Was it a fight for freedom or for the right to own slaves? The complexities of the situation are clearly presented here, together with lively portrayals of the central characters and of life in Texas at the moment of its independence.
