Gary's Write Stuff. 2013

A touching and powerful debut short story collection -- stories that will come back to you time and time again. Twelve short stories plus "extras." Chance witnesses to an incident in the beer tent at Summerfest. An annual raccoon hunt on a small Midwestern farm takes on added significance. A family trip to a local music festival goes awry. Old feelings about friendship and abandonment surface in a happy marriage. A father-son paper route turns tense in the early-morning hours. The stakes are high at a state-sponsored reality TV show. A high school English teacher makes a lasting impression in a culture of violence. Such are the stories of Baffled: Everyday, ordinary characters in what appear to be everyday, ordinary circumstances. Baffled is a search for meaning, understanding, identity or voice, tales of people trying to "survive the lives we've got" without too much collateral damage. The first edition also contains "Gary's Extras:" "How To Get More Out of Any Short Story." An interview with the author. Author commentary for each story. Discussion questions and more. "Crisply and meticulously written, with a kind of quiet and straightforward lyricism...always emotionally, intellectually, and morally involving." -- David Jauss, author of Black Maps. "Stories that touch on timeless and universal themes of male relationships and initiation, though they do so with a touching frailty disguised as toughness." -- Robert Vivian, author of The Tall Grass Trilogy. "Gary Lawrence possesses a gift for storytelling, for hooking the reader and moving the plot." -- Christopher Noel, Vermont College of Fine Arts. "Compelling material." -- Ellen Lesser, author of The Shoplifter's Apprentice. "Testosterone stew, with an estrogen sauce." -- Mark Teismann. Gary Lawrence grew up in Rockford IL, has an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and teaches English for Glendale (AZ) Community College.
