Pen Name: None Connection to Illinois: Eck was born and raised in Springfield. He graduated from Springfield High School and went on to graduate from Quincy University. After graduating from college, he returned to his hometown to teach for thirty-one years in the physical education department at his alma mater. Biography: Phil Eck was a soccer player in both high school and college. After college, went on to teach for thirty-one years in the physical education department at Springfield High School, his alma mater. The journey into writing the book, ''Remembering Fred Miller'', started with a phone call from his aunt in 2007. She invited him to attend the 50th reunion of the 1957 World Series Champions Milwaukee Braves. Her father was Fred Miller and Eck's grandfather. She also asked Eck to write a speech for her to read at the reunion, emphasizing Fred Miller's involvement with the Braves. Over the next nine years, through research and personal interviews with sports icons, industry executives and family members, Phil was able to chronicle the accomplishments and spirit of a man from the Notre Dame gridiron to the pinnacle of the American beer brewing industry.
