Connection to Illinois: I was born in Belleville, Illinois(St. Clair County) and have lived in Palatine, Waukegan, in Chicago but mainly a life-long resident of Waterloo, Illinois (Monroe County) where I also attended school.

Biography: Kohler-Kaiser's book, ''Frozen Grief'', is a true story. It was written after the loss of her sister Kathy Baxmeyer(40), nephew Kadin(7) and Kadin's friend Austin after they fell through thin ice on a rural Illinois pond. She has also illustrated a children's ice safety education book with her daughter Danielle Dunlap, ''See Ice, Think Twice: A Story About Ice Safety''. To help further educate people on the danger of ice, Kaiser has helped form [http://www.projectskipper.com Project Skipper], a not-for-profit organization. A registered dental hygienist, Karen has also published feature articles in dental trade magazines and for 5 years she authored a monthly column in ''RDH Magazine'', a popular dental hygiene magazine.
