Connection to Illinois: Judy lived in Charleston, Illinois.

Biography: At fourteen, the late Judith Cox contracted polio. During her years of rehabilitation she enjoyed drawing and writing stories for children. While she had life-time health and mobility issues, it did not stop her from participating in life. When she recovered enough, she finished school and worked 35 years until her retirement as an accredited health information manager at the Charleston Hospital. Her book, ''The Wellness Tree'', grew out of her experience of battling polio as a child, of hearing people say medical terms associated with her, but not knowing how they would impact her. When Judy wrote ''The Wellness Tree'', not much was known about Aides, but she included that new virus in the book as she knew children were victims of the strange new disease. Judy also published a number of articles, essays and poems. ''The Wellness Tree'' and ''The Wellness Tree Activity Book'', are meant to be shared with sick children and their caregivers. Denny Rogers, the illustrator of ''The Wellness Tree'', created children-friendly characters to carry her work forward. She eventually succumbed to breast cancer and Post-polio syndrome, which was just beginning to be recognized.
