Connection to Illinois: Crothers was born and raised in Bloomington. She attended Illinois State University (then called Illinois State Normal School) and graduated in 1892.

Biography: Rachel Crothers was an Elocution teacher in Bloomington, Illinois from 1892-96 when she left for New York. Crothers was the leading female playwright in the first half of the 20th century, writing and producing on average, one Broadway play per year. She also wrote one book on the art of playwriting.
