Connection to Illinois: Sturgis was born and raised in Rockford. She graduated from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb and lived in Rockford for 35 years before moving to California.

Biography: Margie Sturgis held a BS from Hampton Institute in Virginia and an MS from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. A teacher for over 20 years, she was the first Black, man or woman, to teach in the Rockford, Illinois School System. In addition to teaching, membership on the parole board, and other civil-service related positions, Sturgis was a public speaker, amateur actress, choreographer, director, and editor of the Rockford Chronicle, a weekly paper. After moving to Los Angeles, Sturgis was a city editor and later a managing editor of the Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper during the 1980s.
