Pioneer Springfield found its first success as a market and shipping point for the vast agricultural riches of the surrounding countryside. It soon experienced its own industrial revolution as a manufacturing and industrial city in the years following the Civil War. By the 1930s that era was already passing and Springfield was showing a marked increase in white collar and service industry employment. During the Great Depression the number of city, state and federal employees contributed to economic stability. From the 1950s forward to the present that trend continued. Today the service, financial and government sectors are a major part of Springfeild's economic picture. It is that world of Springfield business and industry that is highlighted in historical photographs in Springfield Business: A Pictorial History, the first of four planned histories of Springfield.
