John Howard Bryant

Biography: A brother of the poet William Cullen Bryant, John Bryant was a founder of the state's Republican party. He was a member of the state legislature from Bureau, Peoria and Stark counties in 1842 and again in 1858. In 1848 he was one of the early editors of the first newspaper to be established in Bureau County. In 1860 he was a delegate to the convention in Chicago which nominated Abraham Lincoln. He was appointed a collector of internal revenue by President Lincoln in 1862.
