Biography: Bernard J. Brommel, professor emeritus in the communication, media and theatre department, taught at Northeastern Illinois University for more than 30 years. A teacher and scholar, he has written numerous books and scholarly articles. He retired in 2000, at which time the title professor emeritus was bestowed upon him. An alumnus of NEIU, Brommel graduated from the College of Education with a Master of Arts degree in family communication and guidance and counseling in 1982. During his tenure at NEIU, he co-founded with President Emerita Salme Steinberg the Founders Society, the University’s first philanthropic society, for which he has served as chairman since its inception in 2001. He has underwritten 17 scholarships or award endowments at NEIU including the prestigious Brommel Distinguished Research Professor Award. Owing to his generosity, numerous students already have and will continue to receive scholarships to help defray their education costs.
