Connection to Illinois: Gutiérrez was born and raised in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. After his freshman year at St. Michael's High School in Chicago, his parents moved the family to their hometown of San Sebastian, Puerto Rico. He returned to Chicago in 1974 and enrolled at Northeastern Illinois University, graduating with a degree in English in 1977. Currently, Gutiérrez represents Illinois's 4th congressional district in the U. S. House of Representatives.

Biography: Luis Gutiérrez has worked as a teacher, social worker, cab driver, community activist, and city official until his election in 1986 as Alderman from the city's 26th ward. In 1993, Gutiérrez became member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Illinois's 4th congressional district. He is recognized as the national leader on comprehensive immigration reform and was the first Latino to be elected to Congress from the Midwest.
