Oscar Devereaux Micheaux

Pen Name: None Connection to Illinois: Micheaux was born on a farm in Southern Illinois. Biography: Oscar Micheaux was an author, film director and independent producer of more than 44 films. He is regarded as the first major African-American film maker, and the most successful African- American filmaker of the first half of the twentieth century. After a failed marriage and financial ruin, Micheaux decided to become a writer. He ultimately wrote seven novels and produced films until his death at age 67.
