Robert Pickrell Howard

Pen Name: Robert P. Howard

Connection to Illinois: Howards family moved to Chicago in 1912. He graduated from Lake View High School in 1923. Throughout his life he lived both in Springfield and the Chicago area until 1986.

Biography: Robert Howard was a historian and journalist. He was educated at Cornell College in Iowa which led to employment as a reporter with the Associated Press. After college, he worked a couple of years in Sioux Falls, Iowa and then transferred to Chicago. One of his several AP assignments was a stint in Springfield, Illinois during the 1930's. After a brief time with the Chicago Sun he joined the Tribune in 1944 as a political reporter and later as statehouse correspondent in Springfield. He covered nearly every election, party convention and Illinois legislative session for nearly 40 years. Retirement in 1970 afforded him time to concentrate on a second career as historian, and led to many publications including 'Illinois: A History of the Prairie State.' He was also a past president of the Illinois State Historical Society and a board member of the Abraham Lincoln Association. In 1986, Howard moved to Philadelphia and lived there until the time of his death.
