[edit] Biographical and Professional Information
Richard Peck was born in 1934 in Decatur, Illinois. He grew up during World War II and credits his writing career to the many hours he spent with his mother reading books. He was educated at Exeter University in England and also attended DePauw University and Southern Illinois University.
Peck got his first experience with writing in the Army, writing sermons for the Army chaplains, but spend many years teaching English to college and high school students in Glenbrook and Northbrook, Illinois before publishing his first book for young adults. He has said that he wrote his first novel for the students he met as a teacher, and Peck's deep sympathy and respect for children and young adults come through in all of his works. Many of his books have won awards, and several have been filmed. Peck currently lives in New York City.
