Illinois Connection

When Petrakis was six months old, his family moved to Washington Park neighborhood in Chicago's South Side. He also lived in Woodlawn and South Shore.

Biographical and Professional Information

Harry Mark Petrakis published his first story, "Pericles on 31st Street" in the Atlantic Monthly in 1957. Since then he has written twenty-five books of fiction, essays, and memoirs, including, A Dream of Kings, which is set in Chicago and was a New York Times bestseller. It was published in twelve foreign editions and was made into a motion picture in 1969 starring Anthony Quinn.

He was the Nikos Kazantzakis Chair in Modern Greek Studies at San Francisco State University and the McGuffy Visiting Lecturer at Ohio University. He has taught at several writers' workshops and was a Writer in Residence at the Chicago Public Library 1976-1977. In addition to the honorary Doctor of Literatire he holds from the American College of Greece degree, he holds honorary degrees from the University of Illinois, Roosevelt University, Hellenic College, Governors State University and Indiana University, Northwest.
