Schulze grew up in Pekin and Chicago, Illinois. He attended Lane Technical High School, the University of Chicago and Chicago's Art Institute School. Schulze went on to teach at Lake Forest College and now holds Emeritus status.

Biographical and Professional Information

Franz Schulze is a professor, author and artist.

After attending Lane Technical High School, Schulze attended Robert M. Hutchins' University of Chicago, graduating in 1945. From there, he went on to graduate from the Art Institute of with his B.F.A. and M.F.A.

After two years teaching at Purdue University, Schulze taught at Lake Forest Collegefull-time from 1952 through 1991. He now holds emeritus status as the Betty Jane Hollender Professor of Art. After attaining emeritus status, he continued to teach courses occasionally and participate in some classes.

As an artist, Shulze worked on canvas and with charcoal. He began writing art criticism for New York periodicals in 1958 and continued this work into the 2000s. He also served as art critic for the Chicago Daily News until it was absorbed into the Chicago Sun-times in 1978, after which he wrote for that paper. He has written several books and has contributed chapters, introductions and forewords to many others.

Schulze continues to spend his days hard at work in his campus office and frequenting the library, when not traveling.
