Joens lives in Springfield, Illinois. He has a B.A. degree in history and political science from Northern Illinois University, master’s degrees in both history and political science from the University of Illinois at Springfield, and a Ph.D. in history from Southern Illinois University. A fifth generation resident of Illinois, he currently resides in Springfield, Illinois.

Biographical and Professional Information

Joens is the director of the Illinois State Archives and is the author of several articles and three books on Illinois government and history. He is also a U. S. Army veteran and a former newspaper reporter.
